How to Deal With Dry Eyes

Dry, itchy eyes can make you look like a zombie from The Walking Dead. Not only do dry eyes cause them to be blood shot but the constant discomfort and itchiness is enough to dry anyone virtually insane. If you deal with dry eyes, try these three remedies to help relax the eye muscles and make you feel better.

dry eyes1. Eye Drops
If you only suffer from mild dry eyes, one of the best ways to combat this issue is through over-the-counter eye drops, ointments, or gels. Simply read the label on the back of the box and insert the over-the-counter treatment into your eyes to help lubricate them and make you feel yourself again.

When looking for eye drops, you may notice that there are two options available: preservative drops and non-preservative drops. Preservative drops, as their name indicates, have preservatives in them to help maintain shelf life. However, if you use preservative drops more than four times a day, your eyes might feel irritated. Whereas non-preservative drops are perfect to use multiple times a day, but they do require that you throw the vial away after you use it.

2. Washing Your Eyes
If you’re experiencing dry eyes due to something being lodged in them, you need to wash them. Simply place a warm washcloth over your closed eyelids for 5 minutes. This will help your body naturally produce tears and relax the eye muscles, getting rid of any dirt or irritants that may be trapped inside.

3. Omega 3 Fatty Acids
According to the Mayo Clinic, studies have shown that introducing food enriched with Omega 3 fatty acids will help to combat dry eyes. Foods that are rich in Omega 3 fatty acids include peanut butter, salmon, and tuna. So instead of a burger for lunch, opt for a tuna fish sandwich instead!

From indulging in Omega 3 fatty acids to using over-the-counter eye drops, these 3 solutions should help you to combat your dry eyes. However, if you suffer from chronic dry eyes, it’s time to schedule an appointment with an optometrist.
