Are You Likely to Get Macular Degeneration?

Macular degeneration is an eye condition where there is a breakdown or damage in the macula of the eye. Part of the retina, the macula is responsible for our central vision and the moment it does not function correctly, our vision may darken or become blurry. This eye condition also affects both close up and distance vision.

Although macular degeneration can be treated using pharmaceutical and surgical treatments, it is always better to avoid getting the disease or treat it before it gets worse. It is also important to seek professional help once you have the following risk factors:

Age. The risk for macular degeneration increases as the person ages.

Race. This condition commonly occurs in whites, but anyone can have it as well.

Iris color. Because it is somewhat associated with skin pigmentation, macular degeneration is more likely to develop in individuals with light-colored irises.

Gender. Macular degeneration is more likely to occur in women.

Smoking. If you are a smoker, you are more likely to acquire both types of macular degeneration, which is either the wet or dry form.

Exposure to sunlight. People who do most of their activities and hobbies outdoors or those who are living in countries near the equator are more at risk for getting macular degeneration.

There could still be a lot of risk factors associated with the condition. If you have one or more of the risk factors above, consider calling our eye experts at Thom Eye & Laser Clinic through 701-235-5200 to book a consultation today!
