The Importance of Children’s Eye Exams

At Thom Eye and Laser Clinic, Dr. Steve Thom offers a variety of services for both children and adults. One of the most routine and important services is that of the eye examination. Pediatric eye examinations can be performed on a regular basis to monitor a child’s vision.

What about the pediatrician?

In some cases, a child’s pediatrician or family practice doctor may perform a brief examination of a child’s vision or do a simple screening. Schools will sometimes do screenings as well and may advise parents to have their child seen by an ophthalmologist. However, these examinations do not compare to the thorough results seen from an eye examination performed by an eye doctor. Only an eye doctor such as an optometrist or an ophthalmologist has the training, experience, and clinical diagnostic tools to perform a thorough and accurate evaluation of a child’s eyes and vision.

Why is a child’s eye examination important?

It is vital to a child’s vision to have a proper doctor evaluate their eyes on a routine basis with an eye exam. It can ensure that children have excellent vision for school and play, have the ability to focus correctly on objects both near and far, and to evaluate their eyes and eye movements. During the examination, a doctor may also dilate the eyes to examine the inner areas of the eyes themselves. These are all tools and capabilities that an eye doctor has at their disposal to fully and thoroughly evaluate a child or adult in their practice.

When should my child have their eyes examined?

Children can have their eyes examined at a very young age. In fact, most ophthalmologists will recommend having a first comprehensive eye examination at six months of age. If there are no immediate concerns, their next appointment should be done around the age of three and then each year or two thereafter. If there are any concerns or more rapid changes to the vision, an annual examination is recommended.
